Dreading It From OctoberPsalm 55:4

I Am Already Tight In The Chest About It

This message is for the reader who is dreading a day that is still months away, and has been treating the dread itself as evidence that something is wrong with them

It is October and somebody mentioned it in a shop.

Not even properly. A song, or a display going up too early, or somebody at work saying the word in a sentence about something else. And something went across your chest, and it was gone in about four seconds, and you carried on with your day.

But it happened. And it has happened a few times now. And it is months away.

Here is the first thing I want to say, and I want it in before anything else, because I think you have been waiting for somebody to say the opposite.

The dread is not a fault in you.

You have probably been treating it as one. There is a voice, and it may sound like a person you know, saying that other people manage to enjoy this, that you are making it about yourself, that plenty of people have it worse, and that a grateful person would not feel this in a shop in October.

That voice is not telling the truth. Dread is not ingratitude. Dread is a sensible body responding to a day that has hurt before, and yours has learned something real from the last few.

So we are not going to correct the feeling. We are going to look at what it is actually about, because dread that has not been examined is a fog, and a fog cannot be planned for.

I Am Already Tight In The Chest About It

My heart is sore pained within me

There is a psalm where a man describes what is happening in his body, and he does not tidy it up for anybody.

My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. (Psalm 55:4, King James Version)

My heart is sore pained within me.

That is a physical report. Not I am troubled in spirit, not I am concerned about a situation. His chest hurts, and he says so, in a prayer, out loud, and nobody in the psalm tells him he is being dramatic.

And notice where it is. This is not a private diary entry that got out. It is in the book of prayers that the people of God sang together. Somebody decided that a man describing the physical sensation of dread should be preserved and repeated, because other people were going to need the words.

Saying that your chest is tight is permitted. It is in there.

You have a physical report that God kept rather than corrected, and Psalm 55:4 puts a pained heart into the prayers His own people sang together. The written word preserved it on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old sentence about a chest reach a person in a shop in October.

And notice what happens next in that psalm, which is nothing tidy. It does not resolve two verses later. He goes on to say he wishes he had wings so he could fly away, which is one of the most honest sentences in the Bible and is not corrected either.

You are permitted to report what your body is doing, and heaven has never once required you to tidy it up first. Psalm 55:4 preserves a physical description of dread inside the prayer book of God's people, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that permission real rather than theoretical.

Dread is specific and the fog is not

Here is the practical claim, and it is the whole reason this article exists in October.

You were never dreading the whole day, and the written word names one exact sensation rather than a general trouble. Psalm 55:4 reports a pained heart and stops there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a month comes apart into three specific things.

But it has not been broken up, so it arrives as one enormous undifferentiated dread that covers a whole month, and a thing that shape cannot be prepared for. You cannot make a plan about a fog.

And here is what happens when you actually name it. Almost always the list is smaller and more specific than the feeling: it is the hour between arriving and eating. It is one particular person and one particular subject they raise. It is the money, and precisely one conversation about the money. It is the moment somebody says her name, or the moment nobody does.

Three things, usually. Sometimes two. And every one of those is a thing that can be thought about in advance, which is exactly what the fog was preventing.

That is why October is not too early. October is the only time this is useful. In December it is weather you are standing in; in October it is still something you can arrange around.

You have time in your hands that a person in December does not, and Scripture keeps a plain report of dread available to be looked at rather than only endured. Psalm 55:4 puts the sensation into words in advance of anything being solved, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody in a month with nothing in it.

You are able to break a fog into specific things, and it has never once been the whole day that you were dreading. The written word names the exact sensation rather than a general trouble, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person look at what is coming without being overwhelmed by it.

Write down the one part

So here is the assignment, and it is one line on paper.

Write down the one part of the day you dread most.

Not a list of everything. The worst one. In plain words, specifically, the way you would say it to somebody you trusted: the two hours before we eat, or my brother asking about the job, or the fact that nobody will say her name all day.

That is the whole task tonight. Nothing is being solved, no plan is being made, and nothing at all is being decided.

You are turning a mood attached to a month into an object on a table, and it has never once needed to be answered in the same evening. Psalm 55:4 puts the sensation into words rather than leaving it as weight, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody at a table with a pen.

Because a dread that is written down is a different object from one that is circling. It stops being a mood attached to a month and becomes a thing on a piece of paper, and a thing on a piece of paper can be looked at without being felt all the way through.

Psalm 55:4 puts the sensation into words rather than leaving it as a weight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present while a person writes the true sentence.

You are able to name the worst part, and it has never once required you to solve it in the same evening. Psalm 55:4 preserves the plain description of a pained heart, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody at a table with a pen in October.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who went tight in a shop in October.

You are not ungrateful, and a body that has learned what this day costs has never once been a fault in you. I am not promising you a good day and I am not asking you to look forward to it. Psalm 55:4 says my heart is sore pained within me, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes an accusation off somebody who has been carrying it since about the fourth of October.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are allowed to see it coming and prepare, and the dread has never once been evidence about the kind of person you are. The written word keeps a plain physical report of dread inside the prayers of God's own people, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you while you look at what is actually coming.

One line. The worst part. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Month I have been tight in the chest about since the fourth of October, you are not one enormous thing. Psalm 55:4 says my heart is sore pained within me, so by the Holy Spirit I write down the worst part tonight in the name of Jesus.
  2. Voice that says a grateful person would not feel this, you were never telling the truth. The word preserves a plain report of a pained heart inside the prayers of God's people, and by the Holy Spirit I am done treating my own dread as evidence against me.
  3. Father, You kept a man's physical description of dread and You never once corrected him for it. Your word says my heart is sore pained within me, so by Your Spirit I name the one part tonight, and I solve nothing, and that is enough.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
