Dreading It From OctoberPsalm 56:3

I Start Bracing In September

This message is for the man who has noticed his whole body starts bracing in September and cannot name one single thing he is bracing for

Something changes in the light in the first week of September, and your shoulders go up.

Not far. Half an inch. You would not notice it if somebody had not once said to you, in a parking lot on an ordinary afternoon, that you looked like a man waiting for a door to slam. You laughed at that. You have thought about it every September since.

And here is the strange part, the part that made you go looking for something to read about it. If somebody stopped you in that first week and asked you plainly what you were bracing for, you could not tell them. Not a person. Not an hour. Not a room. You would say something vague about the season, and the vagueness would be true, and it would also be the whole problem.

Because a body that braces is a body that has learned something. It does not brace at random. Bracing is not a mood and it is not a personality and it is certainly not ingratitude. It is a system doing what a system does with information it has been given more than once.

So I am not going to spend a single sentence asking you to feel differently about September. You do not need somebody telling you your shoulders are wrong. What I want to do with you, before December is weather you are standing in rather than a thing you can arrange around, is find out what the bracing is for.

Because at the moment it is for everything, which is the same as being for nothing. A thing that is for everything cannot be prepared for, cannot be spoken to, and cannot be handed to God in any specific way, because there is nothing specific in your hands to hand Him.

Three months from now it will be too late to do this quietly. Right now, in the first week of a month with nothing in it, it costs you one line on a piece of paper.

I Start Bracing In September

What time I am afraid

There is a line in the psalms that gets quoted in half a sentence, and the half that gets dropped is the half that matters to you tonight.

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. (Psalm 56:3, King James Version)

Look at the order of it. Look at what the man is allowed to say before he says anything else.

He does not open with the trust. He opens with the fear, and he does not open with it as a confession or as a thing he is about to be talked out of. He opens with it as a fact of the calendar. What time I am afraid. Not if. When.

That word is doing an enormous amount of work. It admits, inside the verse, in the prayer book of God's own people, that fear has times, that it arrives, and that a man can say so out loud and not be corrected in the very next line. And the superscription over that psalm says where David was when he wrote it. He was in Gath, held by the Philistines, in the one city on earth where his own name was a problem. He knew exactly what he was afraid of. He could have named it in a sentence.

You are permitted to say that fear has a season in you, and the written word has never once required you to pretend otherwise. Psalm 56:3 puts the fear before the trust inside one verse, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that permission something you can actually feel rather than something you merely know.

That is the first thing, and it goes before everything else. Your shoulders are not a doctrinal failure.

But notice the second thing, which is the reason you and I are still here. David could finish the sentence. He could say what time. You cannot, and that is not a smaller problem than his. It is a different one, and it is the one this whole article is about.

You have a fear with a season and no name on it, and the Spirit of God is not asking you to be braver about it before He will come near it. Psalm 56:3 is a man being specific in front of God, and the written word preserves the specificity rather than the composure.

Bracing is a body remembering

Here is what is actually happening in the first week of September, and it is not mysterious.

Something in the environment changes. The light comes in at a different angle through the same window. A form crosses your desk with a date on it. Somebody in a shop plays something they should not be playing yet. Your body reads one of those signals, matches it against every version of this it has already survived, and starts the preparation without asking you.

That is not superstition and it is not weakness. It is the same machinery that makes a man flinch at a sound that has gone wrong before, and you would not call that a character flaw.

The trouble is that the machinery works in blocks rather than in detail. It does not brace you for the twenty minutes in the hallway. It braces you for the whole of it: the drive, the room, the man, the hour, the year, the thing that was said in a kitchen a long time ago. All of it at once, in one undifferentiated block, three months early.

You were never bracing for a season, and the written word will not let a fear stay that large once it has been asked a direct question. Psalm 56:3 has a man name a time and speak to God inside it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present when a person stops bracing for everything and starts looking at one thing.

And a block cannot be prayed about. That is the part I want you to feel. You can pray about the drive. You can pray about one man and one subject. But nobody can pray about a block, so what happens instead is a general uneasy prayer in September that leaves you exactly where it found you, and then a slow conclusion, never said out loud, that prayer does not do much about this.

It was never prayer that was failing. It was that nothing specific had been handed over.

You have never once been ignored in this, and Scripture keeps a man's particular fear on the page rather than a general one. The Holy Spirit does not require a tidy request before He will move, and Psalm 56:3 is the proof of it, because the psalm does not tidy anything.

September is early enough to name it

So here is the practical claim, and it is the reason this is a September article rather than a December one.

Almost every time somebody does the work of naming it, the named thing is smaller than the brace was. Not smaller in importance. Smaller in size. It turns out to be one hour, or one person, or one sentence somebody says every year at the same point in the afternoon, or the moment when the conversation turns to what you do now.

Three things, usually. Sometimes one. And the reason that matters is not that a small thing is easier to bear. It is that a named thing can be met, and a block cannot.

You can decide in advance where you will be standing during one hour. You can decide one sentence you will say and one you will not. You can decide to be outside for ten minutes at the point when it always turns. None of that is available to a man bracing for a season.

You are able to turn a block into a name, and it has never once been the whole of September that your shoulders were answering. Psalm 56:3 gives a frightened man a specific time and a specific person to speak to, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with somebody at a table doing the unglamorous work of getting precise.

And I want to say the obvious thing plainly, because you may be waiting for it. Naming it does not remove it. Nothing here promises you an easy December or a changed room or a different man. What naming does is take the thing out of the fog, where it is the size of a month, and put it on a table, where it is the size of itself.

You were made able to look at a true thing without being destroyed by it, and the written word is full of people doing exactly that in front of God. Psalm 56:3 is one of them, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person while the looking happens.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man whose shoulders went up in the first week of September.

You are not ungrateful, and a body that has learned what a certain day costs has never once been a fault in you. I am not promising you a good day and I am not asking you to look forward to anything. Psalm 56:3 says what time I am afraid, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes an accusation off a man who has been quietly carrying one since the light changed.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are allowed to see it coming and name it, and the bracing has never once been evidence against you. The written word puts a frightened man's own words on the page and leaves them there, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you while you find out what your body already knows.

One line. The one thing. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

  1. September, you have been running a rehearsal in my body without ever telling me what for. Psalm 56:3 says what time I am afraid, so by the Holy Spirit I write down the one thing tonight in the name of Jesus.
  2. Bracing that has no name, you were never the size you have been pretending to be. The written word keeps a frightened man's own particular words on the page, and by the Holy Spirit I am done treating my own shoulders as evidence against me.
  3. Father, You did not correct a man for saying plainly that fear has times. Your word says what time I am afraid, I will trust in thee, so by Your Spirit I name the one thing tonight, and I solve nothing else, and that is enough.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
