Doing Less Than ExpectedRomans 8:1

I Took One Thing Off And Felt Guilty

This message is for the woman who removed one small part of the day and then carried guilt about it for a week, and cannot work out where the guilt is coming from

You took one thing off the list and then you felt bad about it for six days.

Not about the thing. Nobody wanted the thing particularly, and if you asked around, at least two people would say they had not noticed it in years.

The guilt was not about the item. It arrived attached to the item and it was much bigger than the item, which is the first sign that it came from somewhere else.

And here is what makes it strange, and what you have not been able to work out. There is no accuser. Nobody said anything. Nobody knows. You made a small private decision about a small private thing and then spent the better part of a week being told off by something you cannot locate.

Let me say the first thing plainly. Guilt that arrives with no accuser and no proportion is not conviction. Conviction is specific, it names a thing, it can be answered, and it stops when the thing is dealt with. What you had for six days had none of those properties.

So the question worth asking is not whether you were wrong to take it off. You were not, and you already know that, and telling you again would not help.

The question is: whose voice was that?

I Took One Thing Off And Felt Guilty

There is therefore now no condemnation

There is a sentence at the top of a chapter that people learn early and often do not apply anywhere near their own kitchens.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1, King James Version)

No condemnation. Not: less of it. Not: forgiven afterward. None, as a standing condition, in the present tense.

And it says now, which is doing a great deal of work. Not eventually and not on the far side of doing better. Now, this week, about the list on your counter.

That means the six days of being told off were not a divine transaction. Nothing was being processed. There was no legitimate charge being brought and nothing was being settled by your feeling bad, and the feeling bad achieved precisely nothing except six days.

You are standing under a plain no rather than a maybe, and it is written into Romans 8:1 as a present and standing condition. The written word puts the word now in the middle of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that reach an ordinary Tuesday in an ordinary kitchen.

And the sentence has an address on it.

You are inside the exact category the verse names, and Romans 8:1 says to them which are in Christ Jesus rather than to them which managed the whole list. Scripture attaches the freedom to a location rather than to a performance, and the Spirit of God is the one who applies it to a woman who has been quietly accepting a charge nobody laid.

Whose voice it is

So let us go after the actual question, because it is answerable and almost nobody asks it.

That voice belongs to somebody.

Not always a person, but nearly always. Sit with the guilt for a moment, not to argue with it but to listen to its accent, and most people find they can identify it inside about a minute.

It has a vocabulary. It has a particular tone, usually more disappointed than angry. It has a favorite construction, and if you write down what it actually said to you on day three, you will very likely recognize the sentence structure of a specific person, living or dead.

For a great many women it turns out to be a mother, or a mother in law, or one teacher, or a woman at a church who said one thing forty years ago and has been repeating it inside somebody's head ever since without any idea she is doing it.

You are able to identify a voice rather than argue with a fog, and the written word says there is no condemnation rather than telling a person to feel better about the charge. Romans 8:1 removes the standing rather than the sensation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody finally listens to the accent of their own guilt.

And here is why identifying it does what arguing with it cannot.

An unattributed voice sounds like conscience. It sounds like the truth about you, arriving from nowhere, which is exactly what conscience is supposed to feel like. Attributed, it is somebody's opinion, expressed once, decades ago, in a particular kitchen, by a person with their own reasons.

Those are two completely different objects, and only one of them requires an answer.

You have been treating somebody's opinion as a verdict from heaven, and Romans 8:1 puts the actual verdict in the present tense and makes it none. Scripture states the standing condition flatly, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells the difference between a conviction that names a thing and a voice that only ever disapproves.

Name the voice

So here is the assignment, and it is one name.

Name whose voice the guilt is using, and say the name out loud once.

Sit with the feeling for a minute rather than pushing it off. Listen to the way it phrases things. Then say, out loud, in a room by yourself: that is my grandmother, or that is Mrs. Whoever, or that is my mother in law.

You are able to put a name to a voice and have it change size, and it has never once required you to be at peace with the person it belongs to. Romans 8:1 declares the standing rather than adjusting the feeling, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman listening to the accent of her own accuser.

And I want to be exact about what naming it does, because it is not a technique for making guilt disappear.

The feeling may still arrive next year. What changes is that it arrives with a label on it, and a labeled thing can be looked at. Oh, that is her again. And a woman who can say that sentence about her own guilt is in a completely different position from a woman being told off by the air.

I am not asking you to forgive her, and I am not asking you to conclude anything about her at all. She may have been perfectly nice. The naming is about locating a voice, not about judging a person.

You are locating a voice rather than passing sentence on anybody, and the written word puts the condemnation at none in the present tense. Romans 8:1 says now, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the slow work in a person after a thing has been correctly named.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who spent six days being told off by something with no name.

You are not being convicted, and six days of guilt with no accuser and no proportion has never once been the voice of God about a list. I am not asking you to put anything back and I am not promising the feeling never returns. Romans 8:1 says there is therefore now no condemnation, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lifts an accusation off somebody who has been quietly carrying one since she picked up a pen.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are allowed to take one thing off without being accused, and there being no condemnation has never once depended on how much you managed. The written word puts the word now in the middle of the sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman while she listens to the accent of her own guilt.

One name. Out loud. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Guilt that arrived with no accuser and no proportion, you were never conviction and I am done answering you as if you were. Romans 8:1 says there is therefore now no condemnation, so by the Holy Spirit I name the voice out loud in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence that was said once in a kitchen a long time ago, you have never once been a verdict from heaven about my list. The written word puts the condemnation at none and puts it in the present tense, and by the Holy Spirit I stop treating an old opinion as the truth about me.
  3. Father, You said now, and You said none, and You attached it to being in Christ rather than to how much I managed. Your word says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, so by Your Spirit I name the voice once, and I put nothing back, and that is enough.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
