The First One Without ThemPsalm 116:15

Nobody Will Say Her Name All Day

This message is for the woman in a family that has decided, without ever discussing it, that the name will not be said, and who is grieving alone in a full room

There will be twelve people in that room and every single one of them will be thinking about her.

And nobody will say the name.

It is not a decision anybody made. Nobody sat down and agreed it. What happened is that in the first weeks somebody got upset when it was mentioned, and somebody else noticed that, and after about three occasions of that a family had a rule that nobody had written and nobody could point to.

And now it is the strongest rule in that house, and it is enforced entirely by people being kind.

So you will spend an afternoon in a room where everybody is thinking about the same person and nobody is permitted to say so, and you will be lonelier in there than you are on your own in a kitchen at two in the morning.

Let me name that before anything else. A room full of people who all share your grief and all conceal it is a particular kind of alone, and it is worse than the ordinary kind, and hardly anybody talks about it.

And before anything else again: if these months have taken you past what a person can hold, 988 is a crisis line and it is answered, and a doctor, a counselor or a pastor you trust is the right room for it. Nothing here stands in for a qualified human being.

Nobody Will Say Her Name All Day

Precious in the sight of the LORD

There is a short verse about death that is worth having exactly as it stands.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. (Psalm 116:15, King James Version)

Precious. It is a valuation word, and the thing being valued is the death itself, which is not what anybody expects.

Not the life. Not the memory of them. The death, the event, the thing your family cannot get near without somebody's face changing. God is described as holding it as precious, which is to say: as something of great worth, looked at rather than looked away from.

And there is no instruction attached to that verse. It does not tell anybody how to behave about it. It simply states how it is regarded in the sight of the LORD.

You are inside something God values rather than something to be got past, and Scripture puts the valuation on the death itself. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a woman read a verse about a death without flinching, and it is written into Psalm 116:15 that the thing nobody in that room can mention is held as precious.

And the sight in that verse is His, not the family's.

You are not dependent on that table for the worth of it, and the Holy Spirit does not require a room's agreement about what is valuable. The written word puts the seeing somewhere no silence can reach, and Psalm 116:15 locates the whole reckoning in the sight of the LORD.

The rule and how it works

Now let me be exact about the rule, because understanding it is what makes the next part possible.

Nobody in that family is avoiding her name out of indifference. Every one of them is avoiding it out of care.

They are protecting you, or they are protecting your mother, or they are protecting the one who cried at the funeral and has not mentioned her since. Each of them has somebody in mind who must not be upset, and the person they have in mind is different for each of them, and nobody has ever compared notes.

So twelve people are each individually protecting a different person, and the aggregate effect is that nobody gets to say anything, and every single one of them thinks the silence is what everybody else needs.

You were never the only one wanting it said, and Psalm 116:15 puts the value in the open where nobody's protectiveness can reach it. The Spirit of God is present in a room full of people each protecting somebody different, and Scripture holds the death itself as precious rather than as a subject to be managed.

And here is why nobody will break it. Breaking it requires being the first, and being the first means risking that somebody's face goes, in a room, in front of people, and being the one who caused it.

So it holds. And it will hold this year, and next year, and quite possibly for a decade, unless one person does one small thing.

You have the thing in your hands that breaks it, and the Holy Spirit is with the person who goes first. Psalm 116:15 makes the whole matter precious rather than perilous, and the written word never once treats a name said out loud as a danger.

Say the name once

So here is the assignment, and the smallness of it is the design.

Say her name once, out loud, at the table, and add nothing after it.

Not a speech. Not a toast, which puts pressure on a room. Not a memory, which invites people to respond. Just the name, inside an ordinary sentence, in the ordinary way you would have said it two years ago.

She would have hated this weather. Or: that is how she always did it. Or: she always said that.

You are able to say it once and let the room do whatever it does, and Scripture attaches no instruction at all to how a family should behave. The Spirit of God is with a woman putting a name back into a room, and it is written into Psalm 116:15 that the death of His saints is held as precious in His own sight.

And then nothing. That is the whole technique. Say it and carry on with the sentence you were in the middle of, and do not look up to see how it landed, and do not follow it with anything.

Because a name said once, lightly, inside an ordinary sentence, is survivable for everybody in that room. A name introduced as a subject is not.

What usually happens is that somebody says something back within about ninety seconds. Not immediately. Ninety seconds later, when the room has established that nothing terrible happened, and often it is the person everybody has been most carefully protecting.

You are giving a room permission rather than breaking a rule, and the Holy Spirit carries a room through the ninety seconds after a name is said. The written word holds it all as precious without one word of instruction, and Psalm 116:15 puts the worth of the whole thing in the sight of the LORD rather than in a family's composure.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who will be lonely in a room full of people who share her grief.

You are not being disloyal by wanting her name said, and a family's silence has never once been a measurement of how much any of them loved her. I am not asking you to confront anybody and I am not promising the room handles it well. Psalm 116:15 holds the death itself as precious in the sight of the LORD, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lifts an accusation off somebody who has been quietly carrying one.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are allowed to say her name at that table, and her death being precious in His sight has never once depended on anybody in that room mentioning it. The Spirit of God is present in the ninety seconds after a name is said, and the written word locates the whole valuation in a sight that no silence can reach.

Once. Inside a sentence. And nothing after it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Rule that nobody wrote and everybody keeps, you were never made of indifference and I am done being kept by you. Psalm 116:15 says precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints, so by the Holy Spirit I say her name once at that table in the name of Jesus.
  2. Loneliness of a full room where everybody is thinking about her, you have never once been necessary and twelve people built you by accident. The written word holds the whole of it as precious in a sight that no silence can reach, and by the Holy Spirit I stop waiting for somebody else to go first.
  3. Father, You called the death of Your saints precious, and You attached no instruction about it to anybody. Your word says precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints, so by Your Spirit I say her name inside an ordinary sentence, and I add nothing after it, and that is enough.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
