The One Who Did Not Believe Me

There is a person who will be at that table who did not believe you.

Not about something small. About the thing, the one that mattered, at the time when being believed would have changed what happened next.

And everybody is going to behave as though that never occurred. There will be a plate passed. There may be a perfectly warm exchange about somebody's car. And the whole afternoon will run on an agreement nobody ever made out loud, which is that we do not bring that up.

You will keep to it. You always do. And you will be entirely pleasant, and you will drive home with your hands tight on the wheel.

Let me name the specific injury, because I think you have been describing it to yourself too generally and that is making it heavier.

The injury is not that a bad thing happened. You have handled bad things. The injury is that your account of it was weighed against somebody else's and found lighter, by people who had known you your whole life, and that nobody has ever gone back and corrected the record.

That is a particular wound and it does not heal on its own, because it is not about the past event at all. It is about a standing arrangement in a family, and the arrangement is still in force every time you walk in.

They laid to my charge

There is a line in a psalm about being disbelieved that is worth having, because it does not hurry past it.

False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not. (Psalm 35:11, King James Version)

They laid to my charge things that I knew not. That is the precise experience: a version of events attached to a person, by other people, which that person knows to be untrue and cannot dislodge.

And what strikes me most about the psalm is what it does not do. It does not resolve. There is no verse a few lines later where the witnesses recant and everybody apologizes. The psalm records the thing as an ongoing condition and takes it to God as it is.

Which means Scripture has room for a wound that has not been put right, and it does not require the person carrying it to pretend it has been.

You are able to bring a thing that was never corrected, and it is written into Psalm 35:11 exactly as a standing condition rather than as a resolved one. The Spirit of God is the one who receives a matter with no apology attached to it, and the written word never once asks the man in that psalm to move on.

And note who he is talking to.

You have somewhere to take an account that nobody else accepted, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a true account in the place where it is actually received. Psalm 35:11 is addressed to God rather than to the people who did not believe him, and Scripture puts the whole matter in front of somebody who was there.

What you are still waiting for

Now let me say the difficult thing, and I say it as somebody on your side.

Some part of you is still waiting for that room.

Not consciously. But there is a scene that plays occasionally, usually late, in which somebody says out loud, in front of everybody, that they got it wrong and should have listened. And the scene is detailed. You know who says it and roughly where everybody is standing.

I am not going to tell you that scene is unworthy. It is not. It is exactly what justice would look like and wanting it is not a fault. But I am going to tell you that waiting for it is costing you every single one of these afternoons, because as long as some part of you is waiting for the room to correct itself, the room has your attention for four hours, and the room does not know and would not change if it did.

You have been giving a room four hours a year on a verdict it is not going to reverse, and the written word takes the true account somewhere else entirely. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when a person stops waiting for people to say it, and Psalm 35:11 hands the matter to God without one of the witnesses ever recanting.

And I want to be clear about what I am not asking. I am not asking you to forgive anybody, and I am not asking you to feel warmly, and I am not asking you to accept that it was fine. Nothing here requires you to be at peace with that person.

Getting through the afternoon is the whole aim. That is a low bar on purpose, because it is the one that is actually available.

You were never required to be reconciled to anybody to be in that room, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates getting through a day from resolving a history. Scripture keeps a person's true account intact without demanding a settlement, and Psalm 35:11 leaves the false witnesses exactly where they were.

Decide where you sit

So here is the assignment, and it is about furniture rather than about feelings.

Decide where you will sit and who you will sit beside, and tell one person the decision is made.

That is not avoidance and it is not a snub. It is the single most effective thing available to you, and almost nobody does it, because everybody assumes seating is something that just happens.

Directly opposite is the worst position and it is where you usually end up, because you arrive slightly late and take what is left. Opposite means four hours of a face in your eyeline. Beside, or two along, or at the corner of a table, changes the whole afternoon and nobody notices anything at all.

You are able to decide the geometry of an afternoon in advance, and it has never once required you to explain one thing about why. The Spirit of God is with a woman making a small practical decision about a table, and it is written into Psalm 35:11 that the true account is safe with God whatever the room believes.

And tell one person, so it is not left to chance. Somebody safe, briefly: I am going to sit next to you this year.

Notice what that does. It gives you an ally who is not required to know anything, it makes the decision real, and it means you are not standing in a doorway at the last moment doing arithmetic about chairs while holding a coat.

You are choosing a seat rather than waiting for a verdict, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman in a chair she chose. The written word has a man take his unresolved matter to God rather than to the room that got it wrong, and Psalm 35:11 puts the record where it cannot be voted on.
