What The Day Costs1 Samuel 16:7

What I Gave And What Came Back

This message is for the woman who caught herself doing arithmetic on what she gave against what she received, and is ashamed of the arithmetic and cannot stop it

You did it again this year and you were ashamed of it before you had finished.

It happens in about two seconds. Somebody hands you something, and while you are still saying the warm thing you are meant to say, a small clean calculation runs underneath: this against what I gave them. And then the answer arrives, and then the feeling arrives, and then a second feeling arrives about having had the first one.

You would not tell anybody. Not one person in your life knows you do this. If somebody described it to you as a thing people do, you would be relieved and you would still not admit it.

So let me be the one who says it plainly. Almost everybody does this. It is not evidence of a mercenary heart and it is not what it looks like from the inside.

But it is worth understanding, because it is stealing something from you.

Here is what I think it is actually about, and it is not money. The ledger is not asking whether you got value. It is asking a different question, one you have probably never put into words: does what came back tell me where I stand with these people.

That is what the arithmetic is for. It is a measuring instrument you invented, years ago, to answer a question about love that nobody was answering directly.

What I Gave And What Came Back

The LORD looketh on the heart

There is a sentence God says to a prophet who was doing exactly what you do, only with a person rather than a parcel.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7, King James Version)

Samuel was reading a man from the outside and getting a confident answer that was wrong. He was not being wicked. He was doing what human beings do, which is to take the visible thing and treat it as the reliable information.

And God does not tell him he is a bad man for it. He tells him the instrument is wrong. Man looketh on the outward appearance. That is a statement about how we are built, said without contempt.

You are built to read the outward thing, and 1 Samuel 16:7 has never once called that wickedness in anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who says the instrument is unreliable rather than saying the person using it is corrupt, and Scripture puts that correction to a prophet rather than to a sinner.

And then the second half, which is where the relief is for you.

You are looked at by somebody who reads the heart rather than the parcel, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land on a woman holding something she is quietly measuring. The written word puts that difference at the center of how God sees, and 1 Samuel 16:7 says the LORD looketh on the heart as a plain statement of practice.

What the ledger is really for

Let me say the useful thing about the arithmetic, because I do not think it has ever been said kindly.

The ledger runs because there is a question underneath it that has never been answered out loud. Where do I stand. Am I as valuable to them as they are to me. Did the effort I put in register anywhere.

Those are not shameful questions. They are the ordinary questions of a person who gives a great deal and has no way of knowing whether it lands. The trouble is that a parcel is a terrible instrument for measuring that. It is affected by what somebody could afford, what they had time for, whether they know you well, whether they were told what to get, whether they are the sort of person who finds this easy.

You have been asking a real question with an instrument that cannot answer it, and it is written into 1 Samuel 16:7 that the visible thing is not the reliable information. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when a woman realizes what the counting has actually been for, and Scripture calls the outward reading a limitation rather than a crime.

And here is the cost, which is why we are not simply leaving it alone. The arithmetic runs during the moment. Not afterward. It runs while the person is standing in front of you, so the two seconds when something is being given to you are spent processing rather than receiving.

You have not had an unmeasured moment of receiving in a long time.

You were meant to be in that moment rather than assessing it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman in the two seconds she has been spending on arithmetic. The written word never once asks a person to earn the right to be seen properly, and 1 Samuel 16:7 puts the true reading with God rather than in anybody's hands.

Closing it rather than balancing it

So here is what I am asking, and notice which of the two obvious options it is not.

I am not asking you to be more grateful. Gratitude cannot be produced by instruction and being told to feel it usually produces shame and nothing else.

I am also not asking you to even the numbers up, or to give less, or to work out what would be fair. That is more arithmetic and it keeps the whole machine running.

Write down the one comparison you keep making, and then cross it out. Physically. On paper. The specific one, because there is nearly always one that does the most work: what I do for her against what she does for me. What I spend on that household against what comes back. The thing I did in March that nobody mentioned.

You are able to name the exact comparison rather than the general habit, and 1 Samuel 16:7 names one specific wrong reading rather than lecturing a prophet about his character. The Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman writing down the sentence she has never said, and the written word does the correcting gently and in one line.

Then cross it out. Not because it was wicked. Because it is an instrument that does not measure what you have been asking it to measure, and it is being retired rather than punished.

You are retiring a broken instrument rather than confessing a sin, and it has never once been settled by making the numbers come out even. The Holy Spirit does the slow work of answering the real question underneath, and 1 Samuel 16:7 hands the true reading to God and takes it out of a woman's hands entirely.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who ran a calculation while she was still saying thank you.

You are not mercenary, and a ledger built to answer a question nobody would answer has never once been evidence of a small heart. I am not asking you to feel more grateful and I am not asking you to give differently. 1 Samuel 16:7 says man looketh on the outward appearance without one word of contempt in it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lifts an accusation off somebody who has been carrying one for fifteen years.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are allowed to close the ledger without settling it, and being looked at by God has never once depended on the arithmetic coming out right. The Spirit of God answers the question underneath the counting, and the written word puts the reading of a heart entirely out of human hands.

One comparison. Written. Crossed out. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ledger I have run for fifteen years, you were never able to measure the thing I was asking you. 1 Samuel 16:7 says man looketh on the outward appearance, so by the Holy Spirit I cross out the one comparison tonight in the name of Jesus.
  2. Two seconds of arithmetic, you have never once been mine to keep. The written word says the LORD looketh on the heart and takes that reading out of my hands entirely, and by the Holy Spirit I am done grading what comes back.
  3. Father, You told a prophet his instrument was wrong and You never once told him he was wicked for using it. Your word says the LORD seeth not as man seeth, so by Your Spirit I close the ledger tonight, and I settle nothing, and that is enough.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
