Nobody Thanks A Thing That Always Happens

It happens every year, so it has stopped being a thing that happens.

That is the whole mechanism and it is almost elegant in how efficiently it works. The first year you did it, people noticed. The third year, one person said something. By about the sixth year it had become weather: it simply occurs, the way the lights come on, and nobody thanks a light switch.

And you feel petty for minding.

That is the second half of it and it is the part that keeps you quiet. Minding sounds like fishing. It sounds like a woman who wants to be praised for doing a normal thing for her own family, and you would not respect that in somebody else, so you do not permit it in yourself.

So the whole business runs entirely inside you: the noticing that nobody noticed, the small hurt, the immediate correction of the small hurt, the decision to say nothing. Four moves, in about two seconds, several times a day, from mid November onward.

I want to say the plain thing first. Wanting your work to be seen is not vanity. It is one of the ordinary hungers of a working human being, and it does not become a sin because the work happens to be for people you love.

God is not unrighteous to forget

There is a sentence in Hebrews that was written to people in exactly your position, and its opening clause is unusual enough to stop on.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (Hebrews 6:10, King James Version)

Not unrighteous to forget. That is a strange construction and it is deliberate. The writer is not saying God has a good memory. He is saying that forgetting would be an injustice, and God does not commit injustices.

Which puts your work in a legal category rather than a sentimental one. It is not that God notices because He is kind. It is that overlooking it would be wrong, and He does not do wrong.

You have work standing in a category where forgetting it would be an injustice, and it is written into Hebrews 6:10 that God is not unrighteous to forget. The written word puts your labor in the hands of somebody for whom overlooking it is not an available option, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact you can lean on rather than a comfort somebody offered you.

And look at the last three words of the verse, which are the ones that speak to a person on year eleven.

You are in the middle of the doing rather than at the end of it, and Hebrews 6:10 says and do minister as a present tense that has not closed. Scripture puts the present participle right there beside the record of what is past, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present with a woman on the eleventh year of a thing nobody mentions any more.

Why reliability makes a thing invisible

Let me explain the mechanism properly, because understanding it takes a surprising amount of the sting out.

Human attention is built to notice change. That is not a moral failure in your family; it is how a nervous system works. Something new registers. Something absent registers. Something that has been the same for nine years does not register at all, because there is nothing for attention to catch on.

So the very quality that makes your work valuable, its absolute reliability, is the thing that makes it invisible. Those are not two facts. They are one fact seen from two sides.

You are unseen precisely because you are reliable, and the written word never once treats the invisibility of a thing as a statement about its worth. Hebrews 6:10 records work that a whole congregation had presumably stopped remarking on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who explains a mechanism to a woman who has been reading it as a verdict.

And here is what you already know and have never let yourself finish. The only way to make it visible to the people in that house is to stop doing it. That is the whole available lever, and it is a terrible one, because it works by damaging the day and it turns a good thing into a demonstration.

You will not do that, and you should not, and being stuck between minding and refusing to use the only lever available is exactly the position you have been in since about year six.

You have been stuck between two options and neither one was ever yours, and Scripture puts the seeing of this work somewhere other than in a family's attention. Hebrews 6:10 assigns the remembering to God rather than to the people served, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a woman out of a position with no good move in it.

Say the one thing out loud

So here is what I am asking, and note carefully who it is addressed to.

Say out loud the one thing nobody thanked you for, and say it to God rather than to anybody in the house.

There will be one specific thing. There always is. Not the whole of it. One particular job, usually not the biggest one, done for years and never once mentioned by anybody.

Say it plainly, out loud, in a room by yourself: I do this every year and nobody has ever said anything about it.

You are able to name the unthanked thing to the one for whom forgetting it would be an injustice, and it has never once required anybody in that house to be told. Hebrews 6:10 puts the record in God's keeping, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman saying a sentence out loud to an empty room.

And I want to be exact about why not to the family, because this is the part that goes wrong.

Said to a person, that sentence is a complaint, however gently it is put. It lands as an accusation, they will feel got at, somebody will overcorrect for a week, and you will end up managing their guilt on top of everything else. That is why it has never once been said.

Said out loud to God, it is a true statement made in the right direction, and it does not create a job for anybody.

You are putting a true sentence where it belongs rather than where it would cost somebody, and the written word never once asks a person to keep a real thing unsaid in every direction. Hebrews 6:10 has God holding the account, and the Spirit of God is the one who receives what a woman says in an empty room.
