Doing Less Than ExpectedProverbs 14:12

Is This Wisdom Or Am I Giving Up

This message is for the man who cannot tell whether making the day smaller is wisdom or the beginning of letting everything go, and who has stopped trusting his own read

The decision itself took about a minute. The question underneath it has been running for six weeks.

The decision was to make one part of the day considerably smaller, and every practical consideration says it is correct. You have run it several times and it comes out the same way every time.

The question is: is this wisdom, or is this the beginning of something.

Because you have seen it. You have watched men your age make one reasonable reduction, and then another one the following year, and then a third, and end up in a smaller life that they arrived at one sensible decision at a time, with every individual step defensible.

And there is no alarm that goes off. Nobody tells a man which one he is doing. From inside, wisdom and withdrawal feel almost exactly the same, because both of them involve doing less and both of them come with relief.

I want to say at the start that this is a good question and you should not be talked out of asking it. A man who never asks it is the one who ends up somewhere he did not choose. The asking is not anxiety, it is navigation.

What has gone wrong is that you have been trying to answer it with a feeling, and a feeling is the one instrument that cannot distinguish these two.

Is This Wisdom Or Am I Giving Up

A way which seemeth right

There is a proverb about self assessment that is uncomfortable and extremely useful.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. (Proverbs 14:12, King James Version)

Seemeth right. It names the exact problem. The internal sense of correctness is a real sensation and it is not a reliable instrument, and Scripture says so plainly, which is more honesty about human self assessment than most people ever get offered.

Now, people usually use that verse as a warning against confidence. I want to point it somewhere more useful for you.

If seeming right is unreliable, then seeming wrong is unreliable too. The instrument does not fail in only one direction. Your uneasy feeling about this decision has exactly the same standing as a confident feeling would have, which is to say: it is data, and it is not a verdict.

You are holding a feeling rather than a finding, and it is written into Proverbs 14:12 that the internal sense of rightness is not the thing to steer by. The written word says the instrument is unreliable rather than saying a man cannot decide, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes six weeks of unease out of the witness box.

And notice what the proverb points at instead.

You are able to look at where a thing ends rather than at how it feels now, and Proverbs 14:12 names the end thereof as the test. Scripture directs the attention forward to an outcome rather than inward to a sensation, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a man something he can actually examine.

What tells them apart

So let me hand you the test, because there is one and almost nobody has ever been given it.

Wisdom and withdrawal look identical from the outside and they differ in exactly one place: what the freed capacity is for.

A wise reduction releases something into something. The hours come off one thing and go onto another: onto a person, onto a part of the day you actually want to be present for, onto rest that is genuinely restorative rather than collapse.

A withdrawal releases something into nothing. The hours come off and go nowhere, and the following year a little more comes off, and it also goes nowhere, and the shrinking has no destination. That is a question you can actually answer about a specific decision, tonight, without needing to trust your own mood.

You have a test you can apply rather than a feeling you have to trust, and the written word points at the end of a way rather than at how it seems. Proverbs 14:12 makes the destination the question, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man an instrument he can use at a table.

And I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that turns into a trap. The answer does not have to be impressive. Rest is a destination. Being in the room and not exhausted is a destination. Twenty minutes of actual conversation with one person is a destination.

What makes it withdrawal is not that the destination is small. It is that there is not one.

You were never required to justify the freed hours with something impressive, and Scripture asks where a way ends rather than how much it produces. Proverbs 14:12 is about direction, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a man from turning a good test into a new standard he cannot meet.

Write it with the reason

So here is the assignment, and it is a piece of paper.

Write the decision down with the reason beside it, and read both back out loud.

The decision on one line. The reason on the next. And then, specifically, what the hours are for.

Taking that off. Because it costs about five hours and I am not sleeping. Those five hours are going on being in the room in the afternoon instead of in the kitchen.

You are able to put a decision and its destination on the same piece of paper, and it has never once required you to feel confident about it first. Proverbs 14:12 makes the end of a way the question, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man reading two lines back to himself in an empty room.

And read it out loud, which sounds like a small extra and is not. A thing read out loud is examined differently from a thing looked at. If the destination line is empty, or if it comes out vague when your mouth says it, you will hear that, and you will hear it in about two seconds.

That is the test working. An empty destination line does not mean the decision is wrong. It means it needs one, and finding one takes about a minute.

You are hearing your own reasoning rather than feeling it, and the written word puts the unreliability squarely in the seeming. Proverbs 14:12 warns about the sensation rather than about the deciding, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present while a man says two lines out loud and listens to himself.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has been asking a good question for six weeks with the wrong instrument.

You are not giving up, and asking whether a reduction is wisdom has never once been the question of a man who is quietly letting everything go. I am not asking you to trust your own judgment more and I am not promising the pattern is nothing. Proverbs 14:12 says plainly that the internal sense of rightness is unreliable, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lifts an accusation off somebody who has been quietly carrying one all autumn.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You are allowed to test a decision instead of trusting a feeling about it, and a way that seemeth right has never once been a reason to stop deciding. The written word points at where a way ends rather than at how it feels standing in it, and the Spirit of God is the one who hands a man something he can actually examine.

Two lines. And what the hours are for.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Six weeks of asking whether this is wisdom, you were never anxiety and I am done treating you as one. Proverbs 14:12 says there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, so by the Holy Spirit I write the decision and the destination down in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling I have been using as an instrument, you have never once been able to tell those two things apart. The written word puts the unreliability squarely in the seeming and points at where a way ends, and by the Holy Spirit I stop asking a mood to give me a verdict.
  3. Father, You told a man plainly that his own sense of rightness is not the thing to steer by, and You pointed him at the end of the road instead. Your word says the end thereof are the ways of death, so by Your Spirit I write three lines and read them out loud, and I settle nothing by feel, and that is enough.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
